The National Pharmaceutical Council has published a public health alert for the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, which has been linked to up to 5,000 deaths and about 1,000 illegal activities in the UK.
This is followed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which said that the drug was associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, stroke and heart failure. The agency said there was an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes among patients taking Viagra.
Viagra is known to cause chest pain, but no reports of heart attacks, stroke or heart failure have been reported in the UK with or without a prescription.
This was followed by a similar alert for the recreational use of the drug and its associated risks. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said that the use of Viagra was associated with a high risk of death in patients taking it.
The MHRA said that the drug has not been shown to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.
The drug is being studied as an additional treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension, although it is not known whether it can also be used to treat erectile dysfunction, the alert for the drug comes from the drug's manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline. It is also being tested for cardiovascular risks.
Viagra is currently marketed as a generic drug in the UK.
It is being sold under the brand name Revatio, and is available to buy over the counter at pharmacies in more than 120 countries. The product is available on prescription in the UK by prescription only.
The MHRA said the drug was not being sold in a “natural, medically approved and regulated environment”.
